Coronavirus: After 17 Days in Quarantine at ITBP Camp, 200 Wuhan Evacuees Walk Out, Second Batch to be Discharged Today

New Delhi: After being in quarantine for 17 days at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Chhawla camp since their return from coronavirus-hit Wuhan, around 200 people including seven Maldivians tested negative for the infection on late Monday night. They were handed over the document that gave them green signal to head to their respective homes.

Nearly 406 people, including 192 women, 204 men and seven children were evacuated from Wuhan and put in quarantine at the ITBP Chhawla camp for 17 days. An official spokesperson for ITBP has stated that rest evacuees will be discharged by Tuesday evening and in the subsequent days as per the travel plans of the inmates.

Vivek Kumar Pandey, an ITBP official at the camp, said, “People have started dispersing after testing negative for coronavirus. About 200 people, including seven Maldivians, may leave by late Monday night. By Tuesday evening, every person is expected to be released.”

The ITBP also provided official vehicles to those who want to go to airport, railway stations and bus stands.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan also visited the ITBP facility in Chhawla and interacted with the evacuees. He gave them a rose and a packet containing the annual ITBP calendar each as a token of remembrance.

On February 1 and 2, a total of 650 people were evacuated from Wuhan in two 747 Boeing Air India aircraft following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. While 406 of these were sent to the ITBP facility, the rest were quarantined at an Army centre in Haryana’s Manesar.
