New Delhi: Expressing deep concern over the dismal performance in the Delhi Assembly Election 2020, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Wednesday said that the time has come for the party to take ‘surgical action’ to revive it.
The statement from the Congress leader comes after the Congress drastically failed to open the account in the Delhi Assembly Election 2020 for the second consecutive term in a row. The Congress also witnessed its vote share dipping from 9.7 per cent in 2015 to 4.27 per cent this time.
As per the final results announcement from the Election Commission, the AAP secured 62 seats and the BJP, on the other hand, managed to get 8 seats.
A former union minister, Moily stated that the Congress could not perform because its vote banks have been transferred to AAP as they thought only he (AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal) can defeat the BJP.
“That’s how the people have come to that conclusion no use in supporting Congress party; otherwise it will benefit BJP,” the former Karnataka Chief Minister told PTI.
He further added that the scenario of Delhi is that people (voters) didn’t take the Congress seriously. “They thought that they should not divert their votes, our own votebanks which normally used to come to us, have gone to AAP,” he added.
Expressing worries over the humiliating defeat in Delhi Assembly Election 2020, Moily said it’s a lesson which all in the Congress have to learn.
He said that the focus of the party should be now on reviving, rebuilding and rejuvenating the party. “Congress requires total rejuvenation. You can’t point (fingers at) out one or two leaders (for electoral setbacks), accountability will have to be taken by every Congressman,” Moily added.
“Now, this is the time to act for rejuvenation of the party. It has to be revamped. Surgical action will have to be taken so that it starts yielding the results,” he added.
