After Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh, these states clamp down on illegal slaughterhouses

Earlier last week, Jharkhand government had issued an order for closure of all illegal slaughterhouses in the state within 72 hours.

New Delhi: Days after illegal slaughterhouses were sealed in Uttar Pradesh, several other states as many as five Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states have followed the suit. On Saturday Seven illegal abattoirs were sealed in Bihar’s Rohtas district on Saturday after the Patna High Court directed them to be sealed within six weeks. On March 24, the Bihar government had sought reports on illegal slaughterhouses from District Magistrates. Earlier last week, Jharkhand government had issued an order for closure of all illegal slaughterhouses in the state within 72 hours.

The Jharkhand government’s decision came close on the heels of a demand by right-wing organisations including the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), the Bajrang Dal and the Jharkhand Gau Raksha Dal, for a blanket ban on slaughterhouses. Jharkhand Urban Development Minister C.P. Singh had also written a letter to Chief Minister Raghubar Das appealing to shut down the illegal slaughter houses.

On Friday, the Gujarat Assembly also amended the cow protection law and enacted life term for those found involved in cow-slaughtering. Under this Act, the people found involved in the transportation of beef and other related crimes will be penalised with Rs. 1,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000 fine, says report in leading channel India Today. Till now, the minimum term was three years and the maximum jail term for possession was seven years. Meanwhile, the representatives of slaughterhouses met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday and discussed issues related to raids on slaughterhouses and alleged harassment by officials. If reports are to be believed, the meeting was productive as the CM has assured that no action will be taken against those having legal license. “The chief minister has assured the meat traders that this government is the government of all people. This government intends to abide by all Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines,” leading portal News 18 quoted Siddharth Nath Singh.
