New Delhi: Even as the Congress calls the BJP’s stand on AgustaWestland scam an effort to divert attention from its imminent defeat in the Assembly elections, there appeared to be a connection between the grand old party and chopper scam middleman Christian Michel who was extradited late on Tuesday. Michel has since been produced in Patiala House Court and the CBI granted five-day custody for further interrogation. (Also read: Salman Khursheed Slams CBI For Putting Question Mark on Congress)

According to ANI, Michel’s lawyer here, Aljo K Joseph, went to meet Congress general secretary Deepak Babaria at the party headquarters in the capital.

Later, the agency accosted him and asked him how he came to be Michel’s lawyer to which Joseph said, “I’m an actively practising advocate. I appeared for him in my professional capacity. If somebody asks me to appear on behalf of a client…I’ve only discharged my duty as a lawyer. It has nothing to do with Congress.”

Elaborating, he said, “One of my friends, who was having some Dubai connections, through him the lawyer in Italy had requested it. So I was just helping in appearing and assisting him in this matter.”

On being asked what position he held within the Congress, Joseph said, “I am the National Incharge for Indian Youth Congress legal department.”

Earlier, addressing rallies in poll-bound Rajasthan, Prime Minister Modi said, “During the UPA’s rule, AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam took place. After we came to power at the Centre, the investigation was conducted into the matter.

“One person (Christian Michel) from Dubai has been found involved in the case. Now raazdaar will reveal all secrets. We don’t know how far this issue will go.”
