Ahmedabad: Doctors Find Metal Weighing 1.5 Kg in Woman's Stomach; Say Patient Suffering From 'Acuphagia' Where Person Eats Sharp Objects

Ahmedabad: In a strange incident, doctors at the Civil hospital found metal including iron nails, U-pin, hairpin, chains, bracelets, that weighed 1.5 Kilograms, while operating on a woman’s stomach. The doctors took over two hours to finish the operation and found a multitude of sharp metal objects such as jewellery, rope and zipper along with aforementioned stuff.

The patient named Sangita was transferred to the hospital from Government Hospital for Mental Health Hospital after she complained of persistent stomach ache, Times of India reported.  Doctors informed the newspaper that the woman was suffering from a rare disorder called Acuphagiain, in which a person is forced to eat metals and other non-edible stuff.

“The woman’s stomach had become hard-rock. The X-ray revealed a large lump in her stomach while safety pins were protruding from her lung. One pin had even punctured her stomach wall prompting us to immediately operate upon her,” the newspaper quoted Dr Nitin Parmar, senior surgeon at Civil Hospital’s general surgery department as saying.
