Mumbai, March 16: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA Waris Pathan has been suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for the current session after he refused to chant ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’. Pathan a newly appointed lawmaker of AIMIM from Mumbai was suspended three days after his party chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that he will won’t chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ even if a knife is put on his throat. As soon as Pathan, a lawmaker elected from Byculla in 2014 was suspended on Wednesday morning. Report suggest that the suspension of lawmaker will be revoked after the Budget session of state assembly will end in April. On Wednesday morning as soon as the session started in the legislative assembly there was a huge uproar in the house over Pathan’s refusal to chant ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. Pathan, a lawyer by profession had reportedly said that chanting slogans was a matter of choice and was not binding. He said that the Constitution of India doesn’t make it mandatory to chant slogans. “We can say Jai Hind instead of saying -Bharat Mata ki Jai”, Pathan said.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam, said, “Pathan who is been elected representative by Indian citizen had refused to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai. We have complained to the speaker about Pathan’s behaviour after which he was suspended”.

Maharashtra assembly speaker Haribhau Bagade, acted on complaints made be several lawmakers and suspended Pathan till the end of state budget session.

On Sunday while addressing a public rally in Latur, Maharashtra, Asaduddin Owaisi said, “I won’t chant that Bharat Mata ki Jai. What are you going to do about it, (Mohan) Bhagwat sahab”. The comment was made in the backdrop of suggestion made by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat where he said the the new generation needs to chant slogans hailing ‘mother-India’.
