Ghaziabad, Hindon Air Base: The Indian Air Force day was celebrated today with grandeur and pomp indeed. This is the 84th anniversary of the Indian Air Force. The day started off with a lot of spectacular stunts and performances by various teams in the Air force. The celebrations were carried out  at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad.  The inauguration saw Air Force Chief , Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha inspecting the guard of honour. President Pranab Mukherjee serves the India Air Force as a Commander-in-Chief. All the three service chiefs were present for the Air Force Day celebrations.

The celebrations also saw spectacular Para jumps being carried out at Hindon Airbase on the Air Force Day. Honouring the brave hearts of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha conferred Vayu Sena Medals, Vayu Sena Medals for Gallantry as well as Vishist Seva Medals. Vintage aircrafts were also displayed. A key highlight of the entire day’s celebration was the performance by the Red Arrows of the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. The ‘Red Arrows’ are a truly the world-renowned and admired aerobatics display team of the Royal Air Force. The Red Arrows flew spectacularly in the Hawk jets, a British single-engine jet-powered advanced trainer aircraft. The highlight here is that the Hawks are not just a symbol of Brittish excellence but also the partnership between the Indian and British governments as the Hawks are currently being manufactured in Bangalore, India. Speaking to NDTV  Air Marshall Turner, a pilot with the Red Arrows said,”The Hawks are made by the British BAE systems. They are manufactured here now, in Bengaluru, in your own indigenous, organic manufacturing plant.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi too sent out a tweet congratulating the Indian air Force on its 84th anniversary. “Saluting all air warriors & their families on Air Force day. Thank you for protecting our skies. Your courage makes India proud,” the Prime Minister tweeted today. Meanwhile, the Commander-in-chief and the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee greeted the Indian Air Force and said  that the nation is proud of the capabilities and competency of the IAF as over the last eight decades, it has emerged as an immensely professional and combat-ready force.

The Air Force Day was officially established on  8th of October in the year 1932 by the British empire to show off the auxiliary power the empire had to the world . However, the tradition has continued so as to acknowledge the importance that the Indian Air Force enjoys in securing the Airspace of the country and in National security as a whole.  The Air Force Day celebrations also play a role in increasing the awareness about the importance of Indian air force to the public at large.

The extremely important Air Force has already established its mettle by becoming the trump cards for India in the four wars that the country has been engaged in. The India Air Force has been engaged in the four wars with the Pakistan and one with People’s Republic of China after its independence. Some of the extremely successful operations carried out by the Indian Air Force are Operation Meghdoot, Operation Vijay (in Goa), Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai. It has also been involved in the United Nations peacekeeping missions. It is also speculated that the Indian Air force could have played a decisive role in the recently carried out surgical strike by the Indian military in  Pakistan-controlled territory.
