New Delhi: An Air India on Friday landed at the non-operational runway at Male Velana International Airport in the Maldives, news agency ANI reported. An Air India aircraft, carrying more than 136 people, was flying from Thiruvananthapuram to Male.

A senior Air India official said the aircraft “VT EXL landed on an under-construction runway at Male”. There were 136 passengers and crew on board and all are safe. Tyres of the plane were deflated and were towed away to the parking bay, the official added.

An Air India spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft landed on a wrong runway at the airport but did not provide specific details.

Later, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that this is a serious incident. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been informed and both the pilots have been off rostered. Reportedly, this runway has been construction from March 2019 and work is almost finished. That probably lead to this mistake from the pilots.

Recently, an inebriated man traveling in Air India’s New York-Delhi flight had peed on a woman who seated on the same flight. The incident came to light after the woman’s daughter tweeted about the same stating how her mother had been traumatised.

Indrani Ghosh, the woman’s daughter wrote, “Disgraceful (Friday) on your flight AI 102 from JFK to Delhi a drunk passenger removed his pants and peed on the seat my mother was sitting!!! She was travelling alone and is completely traumatized! Reply ASAP.”
