New Delhi: In its latest directive for cost-cutting, Air India airline will charge its cabin crew for not turning up on time for flights. The late-comers will have to pay the transportation cost incurred by the airline on their office pick-up cab, Times of India reported. Further, the airline has also decided that its cabin crew would put up in three-star hotels in India as well as abroad.
The decision by the airlines comes in the wake of the recent 7.3 per cent hike in jet fuels, which will cost the company an additional Rs 65 crore in fuel cost. “It has been decided henceforth that cabin crew will stay in three star hotel in India and abroad. All fresh tender for cabin crew will be only for three star hotels throughout AI network. This may be strictly followed,” TOI quoted the order issued by the airline.
The other order called by the AI said, “All cabin crew who do not report for scheduled flight will fly only domestic routes for a year. The cost incurred in sending transport to their residence will also be recovered from them.”
Meanwhile, on Monday, national carrier sought bids for the sale of 14 properties, through which the debt-laden airline aims to raise Rs 250 crore. The government is looking to bolster the fortunes of the state-run carrier after the proposed strategic stake sale failed to take off in May.
Against this backdrop, efforts are continuing for the sale of the airline’s non-core assets. The properties, spread across Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Amritsar, include commercial and residential land as well as residential flats, according to an advertisement in a business daily.
Notably, Air India’s debt burden is estimated to be more than Rs 50,000 crore, besides huge accumulated losses.
