New Delhi, August 13: Days after DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) patriarch Karunanidhi’s demise, rift within the party came to the fore as MK Alagiri challenged brother MK Stalin’s elevation as the party president, claiming that real cadres are with him. Addressing media at the Marina beach memorial of Karunanidhi, Alagiri said that he is pained by what is happening inside the party.

“My father’s true relatives are all are on my side. All the supporters in Tamil Nadu are on my side and are encouraging me only. Only time will give the answers…that is all I am willing to say now,” Alagiri asserted.

Notably, Alagiri’s revolt comes a day before Stalin was set to take over the reigns of the party. Stalin was elevated as DMK working president last January. Since then he has been at the helm of the party affairs as Karunanidhi was ill since October 2016. Stalin was party treasurer at the time of his elevation.

Meanwhile, an urgent meeting of DMK Executive Committee will be held on August 14. In a statement issued, the party said the meeting was called to pass a resolution condoling the death of party President and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The five-time Chief Minister, who was 94, died at a private hospital in Chennai on Tuesday due to age-related ailments. The party has directed all the Committee members to attend the meeting without fail.

The meeting may also discuss the date to convene the party’s General Council meeting to choose the DMK President. DMK party officials had said Stalin will be elevated at the General Council meeting as the party President.
