Lucknow: A day after the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet adopted a proposal to rename the historic city of Allahabad as Prayagraj, reports are doing rounds that other institutes that consists the name of the district will also be renamed soon. The proposal will now go to the Centre before the city is officially renamed.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Government spokesperson and Cabinet minister Siddhartha Nath Singh indicated that the names of Allahabad High Court and Allahabad Railway Station may also be changed soon. “There are some central institutes, organisations named after Allahabad… There is the high court, railway station… letters would be sent to them for the same and to take the process forward,” he told IE.

On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, while announcing the Cabinet decision, said, “Keeping in view the feelings and emotions of the people, Allahabad has been renamed Prayagraj by our government. Five hundred years ago the name of the place was Prayagraj as it is at the `Triveni Sangam’ (a confluence of three rivers).”

“Those who are opposing this are not aware of their history, culture and traditions and we can’t have hopes from them. There are many Prayags on the bank of the sacred rivers coming from the Himalayas but this place is Prayagraj (the leading one among them),” he added.

The move was however, opposed by the Congress and Samajwadi Party. Congress spokesperson Onkar Singh said the region where Kumbh Mela is held is already called Prayagraj. The state government can make that a separate city but Allahabad’s name should not be changed, he added.

The proposal to change the name was floated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and UP Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh a few months ago. As per some reports, banners for the 2019 Kumbh Mela mention the name of the city as Prayagraj instead of Allahabad so the renaming might just happen before the Mela begins on January 15 next year.
