Amaravati, Jul 14: Two persons are hospitalised and several were reported to be still missing as a boat carrying 40 people capsized in Gautami river in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday afternoon. The incident reportedly happened after the boat rammed into a pillar of an under-construction bridge. Meanwhile, number of fatalities are yet to be confirmed. As per sources close to the state Disaster Management Department, the passengers included mostly students. Meanwhile, a search operation has been launched to rescue the missing persons. Rescue teams belonging to the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force have rushed to the spot. “A boat with more than 40 people in it has capsized in East Godavari after ramming into a bridge’s pillar, 10 people have been reported missing. Search operation is underway,” a tweet posted by ANI read.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed district officials to step up rescue operations, sources said.

The Gautami river is a tributary of the Godavari.
