Hyderabad, November 17: Mayor of Chittoor, Katari Anuradha district in Andhra Pradesh was murdered in a shockingly brutal fashion by three armed assailants on Tuesday afternoon. Anuradha was with her husband Katari Mohan, who is a senior Telugu Desam Party leader, when the gang attacked the couple at Chittoor Municipal Corporation Office. The trio escaped immediately after.

According to a report in The Hindu, the mayor was in her chamber along with her husband when the gang attacked them first by guns and then by knives. The gang members reportedly entered the premises and barged into the mayor’s chamber, though some municipal staff tried to stop them. The couple was shot at repeatedly and attacked by knives and were left in a pool of blood as the assailants fled the scene. Municipal officers and some TDP leaders rushed to help the brutalised couple, but it was too late. Arundhati had recieved severe knife injuries and bullet wonuds to her head and died on the spot. Her husband Mohan survived the attack, but is in critical condition right now. Mohan was shifted to Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, when his condition deteriorated at the General Hospital in Chittoor.

The reason for the attack and murder is being suspected as the alleged involvement of Mohan in the murder of  Chittoor MLA C.K. Jayachandra Reddy alias C.K. Babu a decade ago. Mohan was the prime accused in the case, where while Babu had managed to escape, two of his gunmen had been killed. Mohan had unsuccesfully contested on the TDP ticket from Chittoor for the Legislative Assembly. Anuradha had however won a thumping majority for the party and had become the mayor.

What is suspicious in Tuesday’s attack however, is that the assailants had time to attack the Mayor and her husband and escape, despite security guards being present on duty at the time. The security personnel took mysteriously long to react to the assault. In reaction to the incident, the police have deployed officers at vulnerable points in the town. Till now, no arrests have been made, however two people have surrendered. Although, it’s not sure whether they are the culprits.
