New Delhi, Feb 24: The second day of Budget Session 2016 in Rajya Sabha started on stormy note over the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula with heated argument between Human Resource Development Minsiter Smriti Irani and Bahujan Samamj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati. The Upper House of the Parliament witnessed several adjournments following disruptions by BSP leaders sloganeering against the government.

Mayawati dubbed the suicide of Hyderabad University scholar Rohith Vemula an “insult to 25 crore Dalits” in the country. She also wanted the government’s response over her demand for the resignation of two union ministers allegedly linked to the suicide. Amid continued sloganeering by BSP, HRD Minister Smriti Irani got angry and said the discussion on the issue should begin “right now”. A visibly agitated Irani first challenged BSP leader Satish Chandra Misra. “Talk face to face Satish ji, I am ready to reply,” Irani said.” Mayawati ji, I request, you are a senior member and a woman, you want an answer, I am ready to reply. If you are not satisfied with my answer, I will cut my head and put it in your feet,” the minister said.

When Mayawati asked the government to include a dalit representative in the committee formed to probe Rohith Vemula’s death, Smriti Irani lost her cool, stood up in the Rajya Sabha and slammed the BSP chief for using a “dead child” (Rohith) as “a political tool and strategy” and asked the opposition to start discussion on the issue “right now”.
