New Delhi: A day after Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia went incommunicado along with his band of loyal MLAs, the disgruntled Congress leader was seen leaving PM Modi’s residence in the same car as Union home minister Amit Shah. For long, there have been speculations that Scindia, Rahul’s comrade-in-arms in the last Lok Sabha, may quit the party. Scindias have been Congress loyalists for a long time — but not without a rebellious streak. It is being speculated whether Jyotiraditya will join the BJP or will float a regional party and extend support to the Congress. The latter is more likely as junior Scindia has shown interest in Madhya Pradesh politics and was eyeing the post of the CM when the Congress formed the government in 2018. Though many believe that the resentment started over a Rajya Sabha ticket, the royal scion, it is believed, wanted to be the state Congress chief. If he wants to float a new party as well, he won’t have to go far. His father Madhavrao Scindia set up Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress in 1996, after he was refused a Congress ticket for the Lok Sabha. Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress joined the United Front, which was at the Centre for two years. In 1998, this party again merged with the Congress. History gets repeated

Scindias: Congress or BJP?

Jyotiraditya Scindia’s grandmother Vijayraje Scindia joined politics as a Congress member but then switched to Jana Sangh in 1967. Her son Madhavrao also started from Jana Sangh. The mother-son duo resisted the Indira Gandhi wave in 1971. But after the Emergency, Madhavrao left Jan Sangh and split his way from his mother as he joined the Congress.

But Vijayraje’s daughter Vasundhara Raje and Yashodhara Raje entered the politics as BJP members.

In politics, history gets repeated. Jyotiraditya could not become the CM of Maharashtra in 2018. In 1989, his father too was given short shrift by the Congress leadership and he could not become the CM. But at that time, there was a scam that resisted the Congress leadership to make Madhavrao the CM.

This time, it was just time and patience.
