The official trailer for R. Balki’s upcoming “Ki and Ka” has released, and it seems the director and screenwriter is back with another unique Bollywood film to add to his repertoire. Balki has given us hits like “Cheeni Kum” with Tabu and Amitabh Bachchan in 2007 and “Paa” with Vidya Balan, and Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan in 2009. It seems “Ki and Ka” will follow his signature style of statement making films that break the rules.
Balki’s “Ki and Ka” centers around the construct of typical gender roles in South Asian marriages. Thus, Arjun Kapoor’s Kabir will be playing house husband to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Kia, a high-powered corporate executive. Aside from the obvious play on the characters names, the title “Ki and Ka” is derived from the gender distinctions found in both Hindi and Urdu (such as, ladki and ladka for girl and boy, respectively).
Balki’s film also pairs the younger and newer-to-Bollywood Kapoor with the older and well-established Kapoor Khan. With a 5 year age gap and over a decade’s worth of years in the industry between them, the actors may have trouble convincing audiences that they make a strong leading pair. Critics and fans alike have been concerned about this never-before-seen pairing and whether they have any on-screen chemistry. Thankfully, the trailer gives us a brief glimpse of what seems to be an easily compatible onscreen pair—which should put most skeptics at ease.
That being said, I am very wary of whether “Ki and Ka” will successfully dispel societal constructs of traditional gender roles or whether it will actually play into the very stereotypes it claims to break down. So, head to theaters on April 1 to see whether this movie is groundbreakingly awesome or just plain abysmal.
