“To make it look like an accident, Handa then ran over his car on Shailja. Handa had an obsession with Shailja and was pressurising her to marry him,” Kumar said.
Handa revealed during interrogation that he knew Shailja since 2015 and in 2017, he and the victim’s husband were posted together in Dimapur in Nagaland.
“While Amit was there with his family, Handa lived alone,” he said.
As Shailja came to Delhi two months ago and started residing in Army quarters in Naraina near the Cantonment with her husband who was assigned to leave for a deputation to Sudan for a United Nation’s mission in a couple of weeks, Handa also came here on June 2.
When Handa came to know that Shailja was undergoing physiotherapy at the Base Hospital in the Cantonment area, he also started taking migraine treatment in the same hospital to maintain proximity with the victim, said the official, adding he also got his child admitted to that hospital.
Shailja left home on Saturday morning to go for a physiotherapy therapy session at the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment.
Shailja was dropped by an office vehicle assigned to the Major but did not return when the driver that had left her at the hospital came to pick her up. The driver was told that Shailja did not turned up for the physiotherapy. It was only later, that a passerby informed the police about a body lying on the street. The police rushed to the spot and found the body of a woman with a slit throat.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the 30-year-old victim was last seen getting into another car from outside the hospital, the police said. The unidentified man in the car was none other than Nikhil Handa.
Post-mortem examination revealed she was hit with a blunt object on her head and her throat was slit. The body has been handed over to her family, who took it to Amritsar in Punjab for her last rites.
A video footage captured by CCTV cameras installed outside the hospital showed both Shailja and Handa seated inside a Honda City car, police said.
“After that Handa went missing and his phone was switched off. He was held in Meerut in the same Honda City car,” a police official privy to the case said.
Police claimed to have recovered important clues from the victim’s mobile phone and her call records.
