New Delhi, Nov 20: Hours after Congress President Sonia Gandhi accused the BJP-led NDA Government of “sabotaging” the Winter Session of Parliament, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley responded with equal vigour, saying the main Opposition party had delayed the Parliament sittings on numerous occasions in the past.

Responding to Sonia Gandhi’s “PM lacks courage to face Parliament”, Arun Jaitley told reporters in Rajkot that dates for Winter Session of Parliament will be notified soon. The Winter session of Parliament usually starts in the third week of November and lasts till the third week of December. According to sources, the government is considering a truncated Winter session of around 10 days starting from the second week of December.

“The Congress has given the most corrupt government in its ten years of rule, while Narendra Modi has given the most honest government. By forcibly saying that a truth is a lie does not make it a lie,” Jaitley said.

“(The) timing is decided such that they do not overlap with election campaigns. (Congress) did so in 2011, and even before that,” the senior BJP leader said, adding, “Parliament session will be held for sure and on all subjects, and the Congress will be totally exposed.”

Sonia Targets PM Modi

During a meeting of Congress Working Committee (CWC) at party headquarters – 10 Janpath, New Delhi – Sonia Gandhi teared into the Modi government over steps like demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST). “The Modi government in its arrogance has cast a dark shadow on India’s parliamentary democracy by sabotaging the winter session of parliament on flimsy grounds,” said Sonia Gandhi, who is likely to step down as Congress president early next month as the Congress is set to elevate her son Rahul on the top post. During the CWC meeting on Monday, the Congress indicated that Rahul Gandhi, 47, could become the party’s chief by December 4. In all likelihood, Rahul Gandhi will replace Sonia, the longest-serving president of Congress, unopposed. However, if anyone challenges Rahul Gandhi then election will be held on December 15 and results would be declared on December 19, a day after Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections results would be announced.
