New Delhi: Chilli powder was thrown at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inside the high-security Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday. The incident took place at around 2:10 PM when the man named Anil Sharma, who was waiting for the AAP chief in visitor’s area threw chilli powder at him. He had packed the chilli powder in a cigarette  packet. He has been arrested and taken to IP estate police station. “Rogue elements who are attacking the Delhi Chief Minister are backed by the BJP. They wanted to attack the Chief Minister even on the inauguration of Signature Bridge. The message from the Central Government and the Delhi Police is clear – anyone can attack the Delhi CM. The attacker will be protected by police and no action will be taken,” AAP’s national spokespersons Saurabh Bharadwaj said, while addressing a press conference soon after the incident. He added,”BJP’s Central government has created an atmosphere where anti-social elements are being instigated and promoted to attack CM Kejriwal. Attackers know they will get all protection from them.”

“How can any random person walk into the Secretariat and attack the Chief Minister. Arvind Kejriwal has faced many such attacks on regular basis. This is a serious security lapse,” AAP leader claimed.

However, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who is an MLA from Delhi’s Rajouri Garden, called it a “drama orchestrated by Arvind Kejriwal himself.”

“This is nothing more than a drama. Kejriwal has orchestrated this scene to seek media attention. He had planned this himself for cheap publicity. In the past we have seen him do a drama when the ink has been thrown at him or a shoe has been thrown at him, these are all his self-created controversies. Nobody can enter the secretariat without a pass and the security also is his own,” Sirsa told ANI.

Delhi Police, on the other hand issued a statement saying they are investigating if it was an attack or powder fell unintentionally. “Anil Kumar came to meet Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in the Secretariat to share his grievances. He handed a note to the CM & touched his feet, and chilli powder fell down from his hand .Probe underway whether it was an attack or powder fell unintentionally.”

“A Sharma bowed down to touch CM’s feet. CM’s security tried to remove him and Kejriwal spectacles fell down. Security personnel removed Sharma aside and found him carrying a pouch in his hand, which got torn and was apparently containing chilly powder. He has been detained,” the statement added.

Notably, this is not the first time the Delhi CM has been targeted. Earlier, he was attacked with ink, shoes and slippers while campaigning for elections.
