New Delhi, Nov 27: Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in trouble with the Income Tax department slapping the political outfit with a notice of ₹30.67 crore. The notice asks AAP to give details of its income and explain the alleged discrepancies in donations received, by December 7. According to the income tax notice for financial years 2014-15 and 2015-16, the taxable income of AAP, which rules Delhi and it the principal opposition party in Punjab, is Rs 68.44 crore. But AAP has allegedly not disclosed donations worth Rs 13 crore, the income tax notice states.
At the party’s five -year celebration rally in New Delhi on Sunday, Kejriwal slammed the BJP on corruption. “On corruption, the BJP is as bad as the Congress. Even judges are not safe it seems. Just as you had uprooted the Congress, the time for BJP too is coming. In 2011, we had gathered here to fight corruption but that fight is still on. We will not sit down till corruption is tackled. Today it has been five years since the AAP was formed. On this occasion, I want to congratulate those who worked to make this possible,” he said.
It is not the first time that AAP has been in the firing line of the Income Tax department. Citing discrepancies in the donors’ list submitted to tax officials and what had been put up on the party website, the Income Tax department had issued a notice to AAP in December 2016 too. AAP had targeted the BJP-led NDA government and accused it of harassing the party and targeting its donors.
AAP was formed on October 2, 2012 on an anti-corruption platform. With Kejriwal as its mascot, AAP stunned the political landscape of the country when it won 28 seats in its debut election and stopped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from forming the government. After a brief stint of 49 days as the chief minister of Delhi, Kejriwal quit to plunge into national politics only for his party to suffer a massive rout as the Narendra Modi-led BJP swept to power at Centre. But AAP stormed back to power in the Delhi Assembly elections 2015 winning 67 seats in the 70-member House.
