Jodhpur, Apr 25: Asaram Bapu broke down after the Jodhpur Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Court awarded him a life sentence on Wednesday. The self-styled godman was found guilty of raping a minor girl in his ashram in 2013. The verdict was delivered by SC/ST cases special judge Madhu Sudan Sharma inside the Jodhpur Central Jail, where Asaram Bapu is lodged. According to the victim’s complaint, she was raped for an hour by Asaram on the intervening night of August 15-16, 2013. He has been convicted under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act. In the case, out of the five accused, including Asaram, two have been acquitted of all charges. Asaram Bapu was arrested in 2013 on the complaint filed by a teenage girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Shahajahanpur. She had accused him of raping her at his Jodhpur ashram in August that year. Asaram was brought from Indore and jailed in the Jodhpur Central jail. She was raped by Asaram in his ashram during her stay in Manai village on the outskirts here. The rape survivor’s father who had lodged complaint on August 20, also thanked the media for relentlessly pursuing the matter, and the district administration for providing them security all through the judicial process. He also expressed hope that the court would hand out the toughest of punishment to the godman.
