Guwahati, Dec 10: At least two terrorists were killed in a joint operation by Army and police in Assam’s Kokrajhar district. The deceased militants were hardcore members of banned insurgent outfit NDFB(S). The security forces have also recovered 1 AK 47, 1 pistol and ammunition after neutralising the terrorists.

The encounter by the joint unit of Army-police reflects the strong stance taken against insurgency by the state following the terror attack in Kokrajhar on August 5. In the extremist assault carried out by NDFB(S), 14 people were reportedly killed and 15 suffered serious injuries. Most of the victims were civilians, including both Hindus and Muslims. The Sarbananda Sonowal-led government in Assam vowed decisive action against forces which are spreading terror in the region.

What is NDFB(S)?

The insurgent outfit dates back to 1986, when secessionist militants formed the Bodo Security Force. In 1994, the group changed its name to National Democratic Front of Bodoland. The group entered into ceasefire with Indian government in 2005. One faction which was opposed to reconciliation is NDFB(S), which continued the guerilla warfare.

The objective of NDFB(S) is to form a separate sovereign state for Bodos, who constitute 10 per cent of the Assamese population. They have expressed their angst against the massive immigration, which is erasing their ethnic identity. The group initially targeted Bengali Muslims, but it is now also involved in the killing of other community members.
