The primary electoral battle in Assam is between incumbent Congress led by Tarun Gogoi, against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led coalition comprising of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Rabha Jatiya Aikya Manch and Tiwa Jatiya Aikya Manch. BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal has been projected as the chief ministerial candidate by the latter. The saffron alliance has the backing of former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. The third factor in this election is Maulana Badruddin Ajmal’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). The pro-Muslim outfit is expected to play the role of spoiler for the Congress, as it would deeply divide the Muslim votebank. Ajmal has vowed not to enter into post-poll alliance with either the BJP or Congress, calling both of them ‘communal’. However, the exit polls released by several news channels and research agencies have opined the Ajmal’s electoral dominance among the Muslims would weaken in this election. Most of the surveys have discarded his role as the ‘kingmaker’ in this electoral contest. Also Read - Himachal Pradesh Schools To Remain Close Between These Dates. Details Here
