Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has approved 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections of the general category in government jobs and education.
The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal late on Monday also the approved the guidelines for disbursement of Rs 5,000 each to five lakh farmers of the state under the Mukhya Mantri Krishi Sa Sajuli Yojana for the purchase of farm tools and implements, an official spokesman said.
The Cabinet approved a loan amount of Rs 95 crore from NABARD, he said. The loan amount will be utilised to construct and strengthen embankments, dykes and other infrastructure across the state, he added.
The Cabinet also approved incentives for government doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers under Ayushman Bharat and Atal Amrit Abhiyan, the spokesperson said.
Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are the other states which have approved the 10 % quota already.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear together all the petitions which challenged the bill to provide 10 per cent reservation in jobs and education for the economically weaker section. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi refused to grant an urgent hearing of a petition filed by Vipin Kumar Bharatiya, challenging the reservation bill.
Earlier, a petition filed by the organization Youth for Equality sought the quashing of the bill, stating that it violated the “equality code of the Constitution” as reservation on economic grounds cannot be restricted to general category and the 50 per cent ceiling limit cannot be breached. The plea further sought a stay on the constitutional amendment.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar has said that the 10% reservation for economically weaker upper castes will be applicable to all higher education institutions (private and government) from the upcoming 2019 academic session. Besides, 25 % seats will be added in higher educational institutions and universities across the country to ensure that the reservation does not disturb the existing quota for SC, ST and other categories.
