He was purportedly heard saying that the living conditions in the COVID-19 quarantine facilities were dangerous and worse than detention camps for illegal migrants. He also accused the BJP government in Assam of deliberately targeting Muslims at these centres.

Assam already has detention centres where hundreds of suspected illegal migrants and doubtful citizens are lodged, including many Muslims.

“We have registered a case against him under various sections of the IPC for criminal conspiracy, spreading disaffection between communities, among others,” police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, adding that the Assam Assembly Speaker has been informed about the development.

Islam has been registered at Nagaon Sadar police station in Assam under sections 120(B), 150(A), 124(A), 295(A) of the IPC.
