“The incident took place on September 10 in a very remote tribal area under Nagra outpost along the Assam-Mizoram border. We came to know of it only after the video was circulated and registered a case on Friday,” Karimganj superintendent of police Gaurav Upadhyay said to PTI.
The victim had not approached the police till she saw the video when she filed a case in the court of the Karimganj chief judicial magistrate. After registering the case in the afternoon, a police party visited the village and initiated a probe into the incident.
The woman has not identified any of her attackers. “The group of villagers who attacked her included women. She was also stripped… We have started our investigation and we will take action as per law,” Upadhyay said. Those who made a video of the crime and circulated it on social media would also be booked under the IT Act. Apart from selling hooch, the woman was involved in some anti-social activities, said the SP. “The villagers had warned her. Even the police had warned her earlier… We will know what led to the attack after an investigation,” he said.
Only last week, in the case of a young woman being brutally thrashed by a man, a video of which went viral recently, the Delhi Police suspended the father of the accused on Monday. Rohit Tomar’s father was an ASI and had allegedly threatened the girl, said ANI.
The incident was reported from Tilak Nagar in Delhi last week. Rohit was arrested last Friday and was taken into custody hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh asked Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take strict action against him. “A video of a man thrashing a woman ( in Delhi’s Tilak Nagar) has come to my notice. I have spoken to Delhi Police Commissioner and have told him to take relevant action,” Rajnath had tweeted. Rohit was sent to one-day police remand by the court.
