At 9 PM For 9 Minutes, Candles Burn Bright as People Turn Off Lights, Unite to Fight Coronavirus Together

New Delhi: Keeping the request of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citizens across the country on Sunday came together to light up lamps to ward off the coronavirus darkness from the nation. The development comes at a time when the coronavirus cases in the country has crossed 3,000-mark with 79 deaths. From mid-day till evening, people were seen buying diays and candles to light them at 9 PM

Residents of a society in Chennai Central in Tamil Nadu turned off lights of their houses, following the call by PM Modi to switch off all lights of houses at 9 PM for 9 minutes and just light a candle, ‘diya’ or mobile’s flashlight, to mark the fight against coronavirus. In Tamil Nadu, people formed the map of India by lighting earthen lamps in Chennai at 9 PM.

In Gujarat also, people were seen turning off the lights of their houses and lighted earthen lamps in Ahmedabad.

In Lucknow, UP CM Yogi Adityanath was seen lighting earthen lamps to form an ‘Om’ at his residence.

On Friday, PM Modi had urged the people of the country in a video message to light diyas and candles on April 5 at 9 PM to fight the darkness spread by coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier in the day, he also reminded the country to switch off lights for nine minutes at 9 PM. Taking to twitter, he said “9 pm (-) 9 minutes”. Few minutes later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also tweeted the same — “tonight at 9 o’clock nine minutes”.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan appealed to people to switch off the lights in their homes and light a ‘diya’ to mitigate the darkness of coronavirus.

“We are fighting this battle in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he appealed to people to light a diya at their balcony or doorstep for nine minutes at 9 pm. So, I also appeal to people to switch off the lights and light a diya to mitigate the darkness of coronavirus,” Chouhan said.

“Only lights should be switched off and all other electronics will remain on. Lights of hospitals, Police Stations and street lights will not be off,” he added.
