Muzaffarpur/Kolkata, Aug 9: Miscreants shot dead a security guard at the ATM on Thursday and stole approximately Rs 20 lakh in Muzaffarpur. More details are awaited. Meanwhile, in Kolkata three engineering students were arrested over skimming ATM machines in the city. Skimmer machines, screwdrivers, cloned cards and CCTV cameras were recovered from the three students, said Zee News.

The arrest followed interrogation of three Romanians who were nabbed last week. The Romanians were produced in the Kolkata sessions court on Thursday and have been remanded to police custody till August 21. A senior Kolkata police officer told Zee News, “This is a tip of the iceberg. We have cracked the modus operandi and will crack the case in a day or two.” He also admitted that they found there were many unmanned ATMs in the city.

On interrogating the Romanians, the SIT learnt that the gang used to lure unemployed engineers with promises of huge amounts of money to skim ATMs. The ATMs were skimmed in April 2018 and the gang started withdrawing money in July. The arrested engineers confessed they carried out a recce of the unmanned ATMs. They would bug the machines by the skimming device before banking hours and remove the skimming tools for data to clone ATM cards. Police formed a SIT after 78 complaints were received on a single day.
