Bengaluru: Attention Bengaluru commuters! If you are driving in the city and jumped signal to give way to an ambulance, fear not, you will not face action. In an effort to address community grievances and enhance traffic management in the city, the Bengaluru Traffic Police issued new guidelines and said the challans issued by Bengaluru City Police for jumping a traffic signal to make way for an ambulance will be cancelled now. Giving details, Joint commissioner of police (traffic) MN Anuchet said there are instances of fines being raised through cameras fitted in signals for jumping traffic while making way for an ambulance.

He stated that the commuters who have received such challans can visit office at the traffic management centre on Infantry Road and bring the matter to the notice of staff there. Alternatively, they can raise a dispute through the Karnataka State Police (KSP) app, he added.

He also stated that every signal with a camera would have recorded the offences for five seconds and after finding that a motorist jumped the signal or stood on the zebra crossing to make way for an ambulance, the fine will be cancelled immediately.

Moreover, the Bengaluru Traffic Police also implemented geofencing at 10 traffic signal junctions to recognise ambulances fitted with GPS and automatically turn the signal green. In this regard, the health and welfare department said it has installed GPS in around 80 ambulances that frequent 10 junctions.

In a recent grievance meeting held in the city, several issues such as illegal parking and bus congestion were also addressed. In the meeting, the residents highlighted the impact of BMTC buses on traffic flow near Nagavara Junction, prompting assurances from Anuchet regarding ongoing training for BMTC drivers to improve road safety.
