Mumbai, Aug 2: 26/11 key plotter Abu Jundal and six others sentenced to life imprisonment in 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case. A Special MCOCA court, which found 12 accused, including LeT operative and 26/11 plotter Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal, guilty in the 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case, decided quantum of punishment today.
According to the judgment of the MCOCA court, 7 convicts including Abu Jundal have been awarded life imprisonment. Two convicts were sentenced to 14 years of jail, while rest of the 3 sentenced to 8 years of jail. Special public prosecutor Vaibhav Bagade demanded stringent punishment for the 12 convicts, whereas the defence lawyer pleaded for clemency. A Special MCOCA Court on July 28 found 12 accused, including Abu Jundal, guilty and acquitted eight others in the sensational 2006 Aurangabad arms haul case. Special MCOCA Judge S.L. Anekar also upheld the prosecution’s plea that the case was part of a larger post-2002 Gujarat communal riots conspiracy to eliminate then Chief Minister (now Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia. The eight accused acquitted on various grounds, including lack of evidence.
The trial, which had resumed in 2013 after the arrest of Abu Jundal, had concluded in March this year before the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act Special Court after which the verdict was delivered in July this year.
