Ranchi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched Centre’s flagship Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) from Ranchi city of Jharkhand. The Prime Minister said that nowhere in the world has anyone even thought about launching a scheme of this magnitude. Reportedly, the beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat would be greater than the population of the European Union as well as the combined population of United States, Canada and Mexico, he added. PM Modi even congratulated his team for bringing this scheme in six months. “The team involved in coming up with the scheme has done a commendable job in the planning and implementation of the project,” said PM Modi. In a veiled attack on Congress, he said that the previous government for using poor for electoral gains only and said he understood the aspirations of the poor as he himself grew up in poverty.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi on his Twitter handler wrote, “Today is a historic day for India! We are launching the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), which is a big step towards providing good quality and accessible healthcare to the poor of India. Over 10 crore families will benefit from this scheme.”

The PMJAY will provide a cover of up to Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. Over 10.74 crore vulnerable entitled families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) will be eligible for these benefits.

PM Modi had announced the scheme on the occasion of the 72nd Independence Day.”Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan will be launched on September 25 this year. It is high time we ensure that the poor of India get proper access to good quality and affordable healthcare,” the Prime Minister had said.

The scheme is an extension of the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna or RSBY, a health insurance scheme for BPL families with entitlement up to Rs 30k per annum. Also, important will be the participation of states who are expected to pay around 40% share.

After the inauguration of the scheme, Prime Minister Modi will be visiting an exhibition on the PMJAY. He will also witness a demonstration of activities such as beneficiary identification and e-card creation.

Later in the day, Modi will lay the foundation stone for medical colleges at Chaibasa and Koderma. He will also inaugurate 10 health and wellness centres during the event.  After the culmination of events in Ranchi, Prime Minister Modi will depart for Gangtok, where he will inaugurate Pakyong Airport on September 24, Monday.
