New Delhi: Some Bangladeshi cattle smugglers abducted a BSF jawan on the India-Bangladesh border on early Saturday morning, December 20. The smugglers took advantage of the dense fog to take the jawan with them.
However, the smugglers later handed the jawan over to the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB). The process of bringing the jawan back has been initiated following discussions between the two countries.
The incident occurred around 4:45 AM on Saturday at the India-Bangladesh international border in the Mekhliganj area of Cooch Behar district, West Bengal. According to BSF sources, the jawan’s name is Bed Prakash, and he is posted with the 174th Battalion of the BSF and is attached to the Arjun Camp.
During their duty, the jawans noticed a herd of cattle entering Indian territory from an unguarded section of the border. While chasing away the smugglers, Bed Prakash moved slightly ahead of the other jawans.
During this time, due to the dense fog, he got separated from his team. Taking advantage of the situation, the Bangladeshi smugglers abducted him and took him to Bangladesh along with the cattle.
According to the report, the jawan had gone about 50 to 100 meters inside Bangladeshi territory, where a BGB team on regular patrol stopped him.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the BSF Sector Commander contacted the BGB. The Bangladeshi side informed the BSF that the Indian jawan was safe and was currently at the BOP Angarpota.
According to BSF officials, flag meetings and diplomatic-level talks are underway to bring the jawan back to India safely.
