New Delhi, Feb 15: The Bar Council of India (BCI) today took a serious note of the violence in the Patiala House court complex here just before a sedition case against JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar was to be heard and decided to conduct an enquiry headed by a former High Court judge. “BCI has taken the incident seriously and has decided to conduct an enquiry headed by a former High Court judge,” BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra told PTI. He said the BCI has decided to convene an emergency meeting at the earliest to finalise on the judge to probe the violence. “We will take necessary action after receiving the report from the enquiry panel,” he added. At least six persons, including students and mediapersons, were thrashed today by a group of men in lawyer’s robes inside and outside the Patiala House court where the sedition case against Kumar was to be heard. A scuffle broke out before the court took up the hearing, as some men, said to be lawyers, entered the court room and allegedly started pushing out students and teachers, mostly from JNU, and media persons, asking them to leave the premises.
The students and teachers refused to go out of the court room, saying they have a right to attend the proceedings as it was an open court hearing. The violence broke out when Kumar was to be brought before metropolitan magistrate Lovleen for remand proceedings but was later taken elsewhere. There was heavy police deployment in the court complex, but the students alleged that they did not take any action against this group.
