Kolkata, March 30: Shunyota‘, a Bengali film on demonetisation byDirector Suvendu Ghosh’s has come under the lens of the Censor Board and reportedly, the release of the movie has been stalled by the regional office of the Censor Board. Ghosh’s film, Shunyota, which is themed on the effects of demonetisation on the common man, was initially scheduled for release on March 31, but with the delay brought in by the board, it seems that might not be possible.
A letter from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has told the producers of the movie that the examining committee examined the film on March 27. But since there are differences of opinion among the members of the committee regarding the certificate, now the Chairman of the CBFC is expected to make a decision and the case has been referred to him. The letter further stated that the producers will be informed “accordingly as soon as” the regional office gets intimation from the CBFC chairman regarding the case.
Ghosh who called for a press conference following this said that he has learnt that CBFC members are not sure in which category they should slot the film. According to PTI, Ghosh said, “If they had any issue, they could have given U/A to the film. My three-part film does not take any stand on the demonetisation issue.” Instead he emphasised the movie shows both the sides of the effects.
Ghosh also said that although his film has no political color, but if the CBFC would have asked him to cut a few parts, he would have agreed.
Ghosh added, “I feel the jury members of CBFC may be esteemed persons in their respective fields, but having knowledge over films is very crucial to decide on a film.” When asked if he will release the film on YouTube, Ghosh retorted saying that he wishes his movie to be screened in cinema halls and multiplexes before an audience and he will fight over the issue.
Reportedly, the film, Shunyota, has been invited to various film festivals in India and abroad. According to Ghosh, the CBFC approved the first two parts of Shunyota in short and documentary categories, but now that he has merged the third part and made the movie into a full feature film, the CBFC has found issues. He further questioned if the CBFC not “okay” with demonetisation issue being talked about in a feature.
