Bengaluru: A 62-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for allegedly raping an 8-year-old girl in Bengaluru. The incident happened on November 19 this year. After the man was found guilty of the crime, a penalty of Rs 14,000 was imposed on him.
The judgement was pronounced within a span of 17 days starting from the time the cops had filed the chargesheet, stated a district and sessions court in Chikkaballapura on Saturday.
The accused, identified as A Gangadarappa is a resident of Tondebavi village in Gauribidanur taluk of Chikkaballapura, was convicted under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 376 AB (raping woman below 12 years) and sections of the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act by Judge SH Koraddi.
The accused was arrested by a special police team led by Chikkaballapura DSP M Prabhushankara within hours of the incident. The man had reportedly pleaded innocence at the beginning of the investigation.
A report by Times of India quoted Prabhushankara as saying, “We filed the chargesheet in 10 days. We had statements of 12 persons, including doctors and neighbours of the survivor.” Samples of the accused and survivor were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Bengaluru. A request for an immediate treatment was sought and the report was ready within 48 hours. Prabhushankara added, “The quick response from FSL helped us file the chargesheet on November 29, just ten days after the offence.”
