Bengaluru, Feb 3: The principal of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bengaluru was arrested for allegedly harassing female students in the school. He was later released on bail.
This came after a complaint was filed against the Principal of Bengaluru’s Hebbal Central School, Kumar Thakur, by the school staff. The school staff contacted the helpline Child Line after which the Child Line filed a complaint.
The complaint alleges that Thakur sent lewd messages to students. It also states that the Principal called girls to his room and made indecent conversations with them.
An India Today report says that Thakur has been sent on a leave. The report says that since Kendriya Vidyalayas did not fall under the Karnataka Child protection policy, the principal could not be suspended.
The police said that the case has been registered under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and the statements of the complainant have been recorded.
According to an Indian Express report, the complaint reads, “On January 14, 2017, I received a phone call from a staffer of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bengaluru, stating that she wished to report sexual abuse of many girl students by the principal of the school. It was stated that the principal was allegedly sexually abusing and harassing girl students, particularly of Classes 10 and 12. He claimed to be counselling girl students and asked them to come to his room, and met them alone for over half an hour to one hour. It has also been reported that he has been sending messages to girl students on WhatsApp that are personal in nature. The staff, both men and women, also reported that the abuse of girl children is known to many teachers and students of the school, but none came forward to complain owing to fear of being targeted.”
