New Delhi: In yet another shocking incident, a mentally challenged man was brutally thrashed by a mob in Bengaluru on suspicion of being a child lifter. The man, a resident from Odisha was reportedly tied to a tree with a rope and beaten up by local residents. Four people were taken into custody after a case was registered.

A video of the incident which is going viral on social media shows the man being slapped and hit after being interrogated by locals.  “He is doing drama,” a local can be heard saying in the video.

The latest incident comes months after a 32-year-old software engineer was beaten to death by a mob over suspicion of being a child lifter. Earlier in July, Narendra Modi-led government had asked the states and Union territories to check incidents of mob killings fuelled by rumours of child lifting on WhatsApp.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had also said that the government had sent a notice to WhatsApp on July 3 after it found that disinformation and provocative messages played a major role in instigating mob violence in various parts of the country.

“We sent a notice to WhatsApp yesterday. We found that disinformation & provocative messages on WhatsApp played a major role in instigating violence. While we welcome WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook they must also remain accountable, responsible and vigilant: Union Minister,” Ravi Shankar Prasad had said.
