Mumbai, August 7: No BEST buses are plying on Mumbai roads on Monday following an indefinite strike called by workers today. Lakhs of commuters are facing the music as it is also the festival of Raksha Bandhan today. At least 30 lakh people take the BEST buses to commute every day in Mumbai. The strike on the festival had made commuting inconvenient for many people in the city.

“I have been travelling by BEST bus for many years, this is very inconveniencing,” one of the bus commuters told news agency ANI. The umbrella organisation, BEST Sanyukta Kamgar Kriti Samiti, which includes all of BEST unions, is adamant on continuing the strike, despite holding talks with BEST civic chief Ashok Mehta and Shiv Sena leaders.  The protest has been called by the BEST workers as they have not received their pay since the past three months.

Another commuter, who travels from Worli to Prabhadevi daily, told ANI, “I stay in Worli and work in Prabhadevi. I have been waiting here for 1 hour. Plead government to resolve the issues and end the strike soon.”

Some even took to Twitter to share their experience due to unavailability of BEST buses today:

The BEST employees have been warned of action in a notice that was sent by the BEST administration on Sunday. At least 36,000 workers belonging to BEST Sanyukta Kamgar Kriti Samiti have participated in the strike today.
