Bhrata Bandh Today: A nationwide strike has been organised by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions and farmers’ and rural labour organisations like the Samyukta Kisan Morcha on July 9, Wednesday. The Bandh is likely to cause disruptions in a number of industries. According to the reports, over 25 crore workers are expected to go on nationwide strike dubbed ‘Bharat Bandh’ in India today, July 9, in protest of central government policies that are perceived as “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate. The city of Bengaluru, which is considered to be a major IT hub, is also likely to experience wide-ranging impacts across essential services and transport.
Owing to the uncertainty, many private firms — including IT giants, start-ups, and corporate offices — are monitoring developments and may implement work-from-home options to ensure employee safety. Logistics and app-based delivery services may also experience delays if protest marches block major routes in the city.
Talking to news agency PTI, Harbhajan Singh Sidhu from Hind Mazdoor Sabha said that the Bharat bandh will be disrupting services across the country. Banking, postal, coal mining, factories, state transport services will be affected due to the strike.
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have not officially announced service suspensions. However, there could be delays or cancellations due to union participation and potential road blockades.
It is important to note that banking sector will join Wednesday’s Bharat bandh. The announcement was made by an association of bank employees. The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association, affiliated to the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), further stated that the insurance sector will also join the strike. Banking services are likely to be disturbed across the nation, although no banking holiday has been announced yet.
The strike involves a diverse group of workers from banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, steel, transportation, and government sectors. Farmers and rural labourers will also join in protests around the country.
