Pune: A 5,160-page chargesheet has been filed against 10 people in a special Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) court by the Pune police for allegedly plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Police claimed that the Maoists had allegedly funded the Elgar Parishad event which took place in Pune on December 31, 2017. The alleged motive behind organising the event was to overthrow the government by way of acquiring arms and ammunition.
Of the ten chargesheeted, five activists, Sudhir Dhawale, Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen and Mahesh Raut, were arrested on June 6 in connection with the violence during Elgar Parishad. They are currently under judicial custody in Yerawada jail. The other five, Prashant Bose alias Kishanda, Prakash alias Naveen alias Rituparna Goswami and “Comrade M” alias Deepak alias Milind Teltumde, Deepu and Mangalu were arrested on August 28 for their alleged links with the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit.
A high court order was stayed by the Supreme Court on October 29 after the state’s lawyer said that the five arrested activists may get bail by default. Thus the chargesheet was filed before special UAPA judge K D Vadane on the request of Pune’s district government pleader Ujjwala Pawar.
In the chargesheet filed on Thursday, Wilson, a member of the Eastern Regional Bureau of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), was accused of planning to use the funds of the party in July-August 2017 to create social unrest, in an attempt to destabilise the government.
Violence had broken out at the Parishad following the alleged provocative speeches which resulted in caste-based clashes at Bhima Koregaon near Pune on January 1, stated the police. On January 8, a Pune resident filed an FIR against Harshali Potdar and Dhawale of Dalit rights organisation Republican Panthers, Sagar Gorkhe, Ramesh Gaichor, Jyoti Jagtap and Deepak Dhengle of the Pune-based Kabir Kala Manch for misleading the Dalits and promoting the Maoist agenda of instigating violence. Police claimed that Mahesh Raut was responsible for granting the party’s funds towards organising the Elgar Parishad event.
The Bhima Koregaon Prerna March which took place between November-December 2017 was reportedly organised by the Eastern Regional Bureau.
