Bhiwandi, May 26: The results of Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation elections were scheduled to be declared today. The State Election Commission was scheduled to begin counting of votes at 10 AM. The polling for all the 90 seats in Bhiwandi was held on Wednesday. Bhiwandi, with a total population of over 7 lakh people, is considered to be the logistic hub of Maharashtra. For the 90 seats contested, a total of 460 candidates entered the fray. BJP, emerged as the strongest player ahead of the polls, leading an aggressive campaign in the city. In the rally addressed by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis two days before the polls, he promised to turn Bhiwandi into a model city if the BJP gets elected to power in the civic body. The BJP had fielded a total of 78 candidates in Bhiwandi. The party faces stringent competition from the Congress, Shiv Sena and the NCP-Samajwadi Party combine. Congress is contesting on 84 seats in Bhiwandi, whereas, the Shiv Sena fielded its candidates on 68 seats. The NCP-Samajwadi Party coalition fielded its candidates on 64 seats.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also entered the polling fray in Bhiwandi, fielding its candidates from a total of 9 seats.

In the 2012 Bhiwandi elections, Congress emerged as the single largest party winning 26 seats. Shiv Sena emerged second, securing 16. The two parties inked a post-poll pact to elect their Mayor for Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation. BJP had then won only 8 seats.
