Bhubaneshwar, Oct 19: Odisha experienced a worst tragedy on Monday when a major fire in a private hospital claimed lives of 22 people. While the reminiscent of the tragedy is yet to erased from the minds of the eye-witnesses, here is a story that will restore your faith in humanity. While billows of smoke filled the hospital rooms, a doctor and a nurse still kept their patients as priority and saved lives. The doctor and nurse who were in the ICU at the time of the incident in SUM Hospital, saved four children.
A one-month-old baby suffering from pneumonia was admitted to the ICU few days ago. Her mother Sukanti saw smoke in the ICU who informed the hospitals staff. The Jharpada resident Kabita had admitted her her child after she fell sick and did not recover. As per a Times of India report, the hospital staff did not have a clue about the fire when Sukanti told them. Immediately after which, the hospital’s public address system announced that fire had broken out on the second floor. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the doctor and nurse immediately took action and broke the glass windows. Then they safely handed over the babies to their guardians. Union Health Minister J P Nadda said that the Central Government was ready to extend any help required to tackle the fire incident that killed at least 22 persons at a private hospital in Bhubaneshwar. Reportedly, over 50 patients were rescued from the dialysis ward and the ICU. Two FIRs were filed in the incident. The Odisha government on Tuesday arrested four officials including the Superintendent of the private hospital alleging negligence in conduct and safety against the healthcare facility. Those arrested include Superintendent of Sum Hospital, Pushpraj Samantsinghar, Electrical Maintenance Engineer Amulya Sahu, Fire Safety Officer Santosh Das and Junior Electrical Engineer Malay Sahu. Commissioner of Police Y B Khurania said that rhe four were booked under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 285 (negligent conduct with respect to fire and combustible materials) and 34 (common intent) of the IPC. Director General (Fire Services) Binay Behera, said a report about the incident would be submitted to the government. Meanwhile, more complaints were lodged against the hospital. Odisha unit of NSUI and another local socio-cultural organisation lodged separate complaint against hospital at Khandagiri police station.
