New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing to test a new-generation missile called Dhvani. This missile will fly at a speed of approximately 7,400 km per hour, and it will have a longer range and be faster than the Indo-Russian BrahMos missile. The first demonstration test is expected by the end of 2025. This will strengthen India’s rapid strike capability.
Dhvani is based on the DRDO’s Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) program. In 2020, the HSTDV successfully tested a scramjet engine. Dhvani is a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) that reaches altitude with a ballistic booster and then glides through the air.
Speed and Range: 6 times faster than the speed of sound. This will reduce the enemy’s reaction time.
Use: For general and strategic attacks. Will deliver precision strikes deep into enemy territory.
Progress: DRDO recently conducted long-range scramjet testing, a major step forward for hypersonic propulsion.
This missile can be launched from the air, sea, and land. It has a range of up to 1,500 km. Developed by the Aeronautical Research and Development Centre (ARDC) and the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), it features heat-resistant ceramics and coatings that can withstand high temperatures.
BrahMos is a joint Indo-Russian missile that strikes 290-600 km at a speed of Mach 3 (3704 km/hr). It is deployed on Su-30MKI aircraft and ships like the INS Vikrant. However, Dhvani flies above Mach 5, reaching a distant target in 10 minutes.
Dhvani is invisible until impact; its glide path is irregular, which evades radar, while BrahMos’s ramjet profile is more easily tracked. Dhvani will be more intrusive against air defences. A DRDO scientist said that BrahMos is accurate, but Dhvani reaches unseen distances.
Dhvani’s success will result in India joining a select group of countries like the US, Russia, and China. Hypersonic weapons make enemy response difficult. It will change the balance in modern warfare. Pakistan’s terrorist bases near the Afghanistan border are also within its range.
Dhvani will strengthen India’s defense against missiles like China’s DF-17 and Russia’s Avangard. Dhvani will provide India with a ‘Prompt Global Strike’ capability. This capability can be extended with the AMCA fighter or Agni-VI booster.
