Chhapra: A bride in Bihar called off her marriage after the groom allegedly turned up drunk at the wedding. The incident which took place on Saturday had the bride asking the family of the groom to leave as he came all sloshed.
The father of the bride said, “The groom was so drunk that he was unaware of his surroundings. He misbehaved on the stage, so my daughter refused to marry him.”
The villagers apparently did not let the groom’s family leave till they returned the dowry they had taken.
A similar incident took place in January this year in Bihar itself when a bride-to-be refused to tie the knot after learning that her would-be husband had arrived in an inebriated condition.
The groom and other relatives on the groom’s side were drunk and they also picked up a quarrel with the maternal uncle of the bride, who was roughed up by the visitors. The bride, upon learning about the whole incident, announced that she would not marry a person who drank, the SDPO said adding that her decision received wholehearted support from her family members and other villagers.
Following the incident, the villagers also informed the local police station after which the groom was arrested and an FIR was lodged against him under relevant sections of the Excise Act.
Liquor was banned in Bihar in 2016 but alcohol is sold illegally and people resort to bootlegging. However, the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar, claims that the prohibition has been successful in the state.
