Patna, Jan 11 : The Bihar Government on Tuesday has refused to accept the Law Commission’s questionnaire on Uniform Civil Code. The questionnaire was sent by the Law Commission to the Bihar Government for its official response. Bihar Government made it clear that centre should discuss all stakeholders in the issue before moving ahead.
According to news website DNA, state law secretary Ujjawal Kumar Dubey said that the questionnaire fails to explain its intent. He further said, “While the Law Commission aims to gather opinion on a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for all citizens of the country, the purpose of the questionnaire is not clear. Hence, the Bihar government has decided not to give any opinion on it.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has already written a letter to the Chairman of Law Commission B S Chauhan expressing his official stand regarding Uniform Civil Code. In an earlier development, a meeting of Bihar cabinet ministers at CM Samvad has decided to oppose the questionnaire on Tuesday evening.
According to the statement issued by the Bihar government, “In india, different religions have been following different practices for several centuries. All sects and communities should discuss and debate on the matter and be aware of each other’s opinions, before any recommendation is made in the matter.”
“After reviewing the entire matter, it has been found that no discussion has been held with any community. Different religions follow their own customs but only Hindu personal laws have been codified. Other religions are bound by their separate rules and rituals. Hence, a decision on such sensitive subject cannot be taken without consulting all stakeholders.” DNA reported.
This is not the first time when Nitish Kumar has expressed his displeasure towards the move. He has criticized Uniform Civil Code in JD(U) national council meeting in Rajgir last year where he alleged that centre was trying to impose it over minorities in India.
