Surat (Gujarat): A migrant worker from Bihar was allegedly beaten to death on Friday. The family of the deceased said that Amarjeet Singh was beaten with rods by an agitated mob when he was returning from work. Singh worked in a mill in Gujarat’s Pandeshwara city. Singh had come to Gujarat as a 17-year-old in search of work and had been living in Surat for the last 15 years. The victim, who is survived by his wife and two kids, had even managed to build his own house, his family said. Demanding justice, the victim’s father urged the Gujarat and Bihar administrations to control the violence. The mob attack has come in the wake of the violence which has gripped Gujarat since a 19-year-old migrant worker from Bihar kidnapped and raped a 14-month-old. The Congress had on Friday alleged that the attacks on north Indian migrants in Gujarat was in pursuance of a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hide its failures both at the Centre and the state. The Congress party also demanded that CM Vijay Rupani be sacked for failing to control the violence. The grand-old party also alleged that BJP chief Amit Shah and CM Vijay Rupani had been instigating mob to attack migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to divert people’s attention from burning issues like unemployment, tumbling rupee and a sinking economy. “On back foot for its continued failures in containing skyrocketing petrol-diesel prices, a historically devalued rupee, rampant joblessness and a sinking economy, BJP and its government in the state are acting in tandem to target poor people,” Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil told the media here.

The incident has come two days after a case was filed against Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Congress leader Alpesh Thakor over the violence against migrant workers from Bihar in Gujarat. In his petition, he said that Rupani failed to control the violence against Bihari migrant workers in Gujarat and Thakore’s Sena had forced migrant workers to flee.

The police have filed Police have filed 35 complaints and detained around 450 persons for attacking the migrant community residing in Gujarat, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said. After the case of rape of a toddler, there were widespread attacks on migrant labourer residents, especially from north India, believing that some from the community were responsible for the ghastly crime.
