New Delhi, March 15: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) shocking defeat in Gorakhpur Lok Sabha bypoll has given the Congress ample ammunition to target the saffron party in Karnataka where Assembly polls are due later this year. Soon after results for Gorakhpur bypoll were announced on Wednesday, the Congress tweeted a photo of former state CM Yedyurappa seeking blessing of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
“Mr. Yeddyurappa, at-least now, show some self respect, and stop bowing to an outsider who can’t even win his own seat!” the party’s tweet said.
Hours later, the BJP responded in the same vein descring the Congress as a party of sycophants. The party, in its tweet, also took a dig at Congress president Rahul Gandhi without actually naming him.

In what was being seen as a big test for Yogi Adityanath, who is just days away from completing a year as UP CM, his party, the BJP, lost both Gorakhpur, Phulpur Lok Sabha seats. Both the seats were captured by the Samajwadi Party. The BJP’s defeat has come at a time when the Opposition led by the Congress is working to stitch a strong alliance to challenge the BJP-led NDA in 2019 general elections. Stunned by the results, UP CM Yogi Adityanath admitted that his party was ‘overconfident’ of a positive outcome.
“When the parliamentary byelections were declared, all opposition parties SP, BSP, Congress were fighting separately. Towards the end… in the midst of campaigning for the byelections, the SP and BSP entered into an unnatural deal in view of the Rajya Sabha biennial elections and there was some shortcoming on our part in understanding its impact and over-confidence is a factor in this,” a visibly upset Adityanath told reporters in Lucknow.
