New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party came down heavily on Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government after it denied permission to the state BJP to land party president Amit Shah’s chopper at the Malda airstrip.

“At same helipad Mamata Banerjee’s helicopter landed few days ago. Some journalists went there, I have pictures, it is neat and clean. Helicopters are landing  and can land. Based on baseless falsehood, by abuse of govt power, helicopter of Amit Shah had been denied,” said Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Reacting sharply to the BJP’s allegations, Mamata Banerjee said that the ruling party is distorting information and misleading people. “Permission was given but there are security issues. Police had said chopper(Amit Shah’s)should land at some other place,I also change my chopper’s landing on police request. We granted permission for meeting as we believe in democracy,” the West Bengal CM said in statement.

The BJP president, who was recently discharged from AIIMS after successful treatment at AIIMS in Delhi is scheduled to address a rally in Malda on January 22, Tuesday. He will reach Kolkata and then take a helicopter from there to reach Malda where he will participate in a public rally with BJP workers from North Bengal.

In a letter dated 18 January, Additional District Magistrate, Malda has informed the BJP that it is not possible to grant permission to land helicopters at Malda airport this week.

“As per report of the executive engineer, PWD (civil), Malda Division, up-gradation of work at Malda Airport is going on. A large quantity of fine sand, dust and GSB materials is lying all along the runway and also stacked all around the site,” Additional District Magistrate of Malda told BJP.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of BJP Malda unit dismissed the administration’s claims, saying it was already being used by the state government.

“The Malda airport is now being used by West Bengal government for landing their helicopter service every Wednesday. You’re saying that Malda airport us not suitable for safe landing, then why you are allowing helicopter of West Bengal government?” the BJP leader had asked.
