Kolkata (West Bengal): Reacting to the exodus of migrant workers in Gujarat, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of not being able to control the mass departure of people following the rape of a 14-month-old by a migrant worker. Terming the Gujarat exodus as “disastrous”, she further alleged that the saffron party only creates “confusion and communal tension” among people.
“Whatever is happening in Gujarat, of course, provocation is there. People are scared&are fleeing from Gujarat. It’s a disastrous situation. I don’t know why BJP is not controlling all this. They (BJP) only create confusion and communal tension among people,” CM Mamata Banerjee was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Banerjee’s allegations came hours after the Congress party hit out at Gujarat government saying it was unwilling to prevent violence on the migrants even as it assailed Uttar Pradesh and Bihar governments for giving a “clean chit” to the Vijay Rupani-led BJP dispensation. The party also demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP CM Adityanath for claiming there were no mob attacks on the migrants.
Adityanath had on Monday claimed that he was informed by Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani that no such incident had taken place in last three days and people, jealous of Gujarat’s development, have been spreading rumours. “Gujarat CM has clearly told me that no such incident has taken place in last 3 days. Ppl who are jealous of development in Gujarat are spreading such rumours. Effective steps have been taken by Gujarat govt,” he said.
Terming the situation in Gujarat as “volatile”, Tiwari said, “Ridiculousness and preposterousness have touched a new high. To please the Prime Minister, the Chief Ministers of UP and Bihar, instead of empathising with their people and trying to prevail upon the central and Gujarat governments to act, are in an overdrive giving a clean chit to the Gujarat government.”
“It seems the Gujarat government is both incapable and unwilling to stop these incidents which have now spread to central Gujarat,” he added.
On September 28, a 14-month-old girl was allegedly raped in a village near Himmatnagar town of Sabarkantha district by a migrant worker from Bihar. Following the incident, widespread attacks on migrant labourer residents, especially from north India, were reported believing that some from the community were responsible for the ghastly crime.
