Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday attacked the Andhra Pradesh government for withdraws ‘general’ consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to exercise authority in the state without its permission, alleging that CM Chandrababu Naidu is trying to shield corrupt people with this move.
The Principal Secretary (Home) in Andhra Pradesh, A.R. Anuradha, issued the orders dated November 8, exercising powers under Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, 1946. According to the reports, the “confidential” government order was leaked on Thursday night.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, Government hereby withdraw the general consent accorded (in GO Ms 109) to all the members of the Delhi Special Police Establishment to exercise the powers and jurisdiction under the said Act in the state of Andhra Pradesh,” the latest order read.
On August 3, the state government had given the “general” consent it gave to the investigation agency to exercise its powers in the state but revoked the same today. Official sources claimed that the order was necessary since the “CBI had lost its credibility and integrity in the wake of recent developments”.
TDP President and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had been accusing the Modi government of misusing central agencies to target TDP leaders for demanding special category status to the state.
There have been a series of Income Tax searches at the offices and residences of TDP leaders in recent weeks. TDP leaders had also voiced the apprehension that the Centre could use CBI and other agencies to target the top leadership of the party. Following which, Naidu announced that the state government will not provide cover to the Income Tax officials for conducting raids in the state.
Following Naidu’s withdrawal of the “general” consent, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomes the move, saying that “he has done the right thing.” “Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu has done the right thing in saying that he won’t allow Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in his state,” she said while addressing a public gathering.
